Analistas Económicos de Andalucía (AEA), research company of Grupo Unicaja Banco, has held a meeting of its Board of Directors at which, among other topics, it has assessed the more than one hundred actions developed during 2018 and the milestones in its history. Since its inception, it has published more than 300 documents.

With over 25 years of history, this company has become a reference in the field of regional and national economic analysis, especially in Andalusia and Castilla y Leon.

With regard to the more than one hundred actions developed in 2018, more than 40 have been own or commissioned reports and studies, on the economic situation or on the impact of different economic or social aspects.

Additionally, this research company of Grupo Unicaja Banco has contributed to disseminate economic knowledge through the preparation of around 60 articles and collaborations for the media.

It has also participated in ten workshops, conferences and seminars, where the main challenges faced by the economies of Spain, Andalusia and Castilla y Leon have been analyzed, as well as the current situation of the pension system, international competitiveness, the evolution of salaries and employment, the territorial incidence of the proposal for General State Budget for 2019 or the demographic trends and their consequences for growth and sustainability of the welfare state.

Studies prepared

Among the studies prepared by Analistas Económicos de Andalucía, the following can be mentioned: quarterly reports on Economic Forecasts, for Andalusia and Castilla y Leon; the Annual Agricultural Report on Andalusia and on Castilla y Leon, and the management and publication of the Andalusia Central Balance Sheet statistics, as well as of the Annual Report on Businesses of Castilla y Leon.

Other studies have been prepared on request. For example, for Fundación Ciedes (integrated by the main institutions and entities of the city of Malaga), it prepares the gazettes Málaga Economía y Sociedad, which include the Yearbook, and the Booklet of Malaga Strategic Plan, which in 2018 focused on the analysis of the Europe 2020 strategy and on the sustainable development 2030 and its adaptation to the city of Malaga.

The collaboration with other institutions expands to the Malaga Association of Economists (Colegio de Economistas de Málaga) and to the General Council of Economists (Consejo General de Economistas), with the preparation of the Economic Barometer of the Malaga Province and of the Economic and Financial Observatory, respectively.

Also, for the regional government (Junta de Andalucía) and its agencies, it has developed the Preparatory Study of Integrated Territorial Investment (TI) of Jaen before the European Union, and the Report on the economic impact of sports in Andalusia in 2018.

The analysis of the economic impact of the AVE train in Malaga, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of its arrival to the city; the relevance of the tourism sector in the Costa del Sol, and the strategic importance of the aeronautical, automotive and agri-food sectors for the development of the industrial fabric in Spain have been other of the topics which have driven the working lines of this research company in 2018.

Changes to the Board

Furthermore, in 2018 some changes were made in the governance of Analistas Económicos de Andalucía, with the appointment as new directors of Alejandro Menéndez, Professor of Financial and Taxation Law at the University of Valladolid, and of José Ignacio Sánchez Macías, Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the University of Salamanca (both were directors of EspañaDuero, which completed its integration into Unicaja Banco in last September), as well as José María López Jiménez, Head of CSR at Unicaja Banco.

The Board of Directors of Analistas Económicos de Andalucía is currently composed by:

  • Chair: José M. Domínguez Martínez (General Director of General and Technical Secretariat at Unicaja Banco and Professor of Public Finance at the University of Malaga).
  • Deputy Chair: Mariano Vergara Utrera (lawyer and Deputy Chair of Fundación Unicaja).
  • CEO: Rafael López del Paso (Head of Technical Cabinet, Efficiency and Studies at Unicaja Banco).
