The Salamanca School Chair, sponsored by Unicaja and promoted in collaboration with the University of Salamanca and the Salamanca Chamber of Commerce, held the forum La Audiencia Nacional, garante del Estado de Derecho (‘The National High Court, guarantor of the rule of law’), a gathering for legal and institutional reflection.
The event, which took place on Monday 20 April in the university’s historic building, featured a keynote address by the President of the National High Court, Juan Manuel Fernández Martínez, and brought together various institutional authorities, reinforcing the academic and institutional nature of the initiative.
This forum forms part of the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the School of Salamanca (1526–2026), one of the most influential schools of thought of the European Renaissance, which emerged within the university environment of Salamanca and had an intellectual influence of universal scope.
The School of Salamanca has been key in the formulation of fundamental principles that remain relevant today, such as human rights, international law, the limitation of power, human dignity, and an ethical vision of the economy and trade.
The celebration of the 500th anniversary is an event of university, institutional, national and international significance, which will unfold throughout 2026 through a wide-ranging programme of academic, cultural and public engagement activities. These initiatives aim to connect the humanist legacy of the School of Salamanca with the legal, institutional and social challenges of the present, highlighting its continued relevance in contemporary debate.
Unicaja’s support for this initiative reflects the organisation’s commitment to promoting academic and cultural activities within the regions where it operates, in this case in Salamanca and its province, thereby contributing to the strengthening of the professional and institutional fabric.
