Edufinet Project’s Conferences on Financial Education for Young People –promoted by Unicaja Banco and Fundación Unicaja- are linked to the Financial Olympics, which reach its 11th edition this year.

The Edufinet Project, promoted by Unicaja Banco and Fundación Unicaja, is developing in the province of Malaga a new edition of the Conferences on Financial Education for Young People, aimed at providing Baccalaureate students with a clear view of the economic and financial world.

This initiative, which reaches its eleventh edition and with invitations to participate extended to high schools from Andalusia, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid, Ceuta, and Melilla, intends to continue teaching the basic aspects of economics and finance, paying special attention to the financial products and services that students use or will use throughout their life. As a new feature this year, topics related to digital transformation and sustainable finance have been included.

In short, the goal of these conferences of the Edufinet Project, linked to the 11th Financial Olympics, is to promote financial education, focused on daily elements, with the purpose of teaching the young high school students the appropriate skills for their day-to-day use.

Practical workshops of 60 to 90 minutes are delivered in high schools, adapted to the needs of young people and addressing topics such as income vs. wealth; Gross Domestic Product (GDP); inflation; interest rates; financial system, digital transformation and sustainable finance; sight and term accounts, cards and investment funds or loans. All of the previous is explained analyzing those aspects to be considered in decision-making and assessing the consequences that those decisions may involve.

More than 19,000 students from some 300 high schools in Andalusia, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and Melilla took part in the latest edition of the Conferences on Financial Education for Young People, and around 360 workshops were delivered.

Edufinet Project, a pioneering programme

The Edufinet Project was launched at the end of 2007, although its development began in 2005, within Unicaja, with the collaboration of the International University of Andalusia (Universidad Internacional de Andalucía, UNIA) and the University of Malaga (UMA).

Edufinet has the support of 16 universities and more than ten business institutions and organizations. Since it was launched nearly 15 years ago, more than 152,000 people have participated in the different seminars, workshops, courses and lectures that it has developed, of which more than 108,000 have attended the Conferences on Financial Education for Young People.

The website www.edufinet.com has registered so far more than 7.8 million visits, with access from nearly 180 countries. Edufinet offers two additional specific Internet portals: one aimed at business owners and entrepreneurs (Edufiemp) and one aimed at financial education for young people (Edufinext).

The Edufinet Project will also organize new activities during the school year 2019-2020, such as the I Workshops on Financial Education for Primary Education Students, a screening series on financial films and games and competitions on finance, available on its website.

In addition to those activities, the Project works in other initiatives, such as Financial Guide in English, a simulator of business plans for new projects, or a microsite on fintech.

Finally, Edufinet will continue organizing the 3rd Conferences on Financial Education for Vocational Training and those targeted to adults. The goal of those activities is to provide participants with a clear view of the world of economics and finance.
