Leading experts, authorities and users from the water sector gathered at the technical conference ‘Governance and the Future of Groundwater’, held on 28 and 29 May in El Ejido (Almería), with the support of Unicaja.

The event, organised by the Spanish Association of Groundwater Users (AEUAS) to mark its 25th anniversary, in collaboration with the Central Board of Users of Groundwater Body 060.013 (JCUMAS), addressed the main challenges of sustainable water management, with a particular focus on groundwater governance and the use of complementary resources such as desalinated and reclaimed water.

The programme included technical round-table discussions focusing on the situation of water bodies at risk and action programmes, as well as practical experiences in the Campo de Dalías, with visits to high-tech greenhouses and the desalination plant managed by ACUAMED.

The event also featured a presentation by Unicaja’s regional manager for Eastern Andalusia, Juan Cayuela, among other speakers.

Unicaja’s support for this event forms part of its commitment to sustainable development and support for the agri-food sector, as well as its connection with the regions where it operates, such as Almería and its province.

The Spanish Association of Groundwater Users (AEUAS) has been working for a quarter of a century on the protection and efficient management of groundwater resources in Spain. For its part, the Central Board of Users of Groundwater Body 060.013 "Campo de Dalías-Sierra de Gádor" is a key entity in water management in western Almería.
