Unicaja has signed a collaboration agreement with the Regulatory Council of the Bierzo Designation of Origin (DO) to support the activities of the wineries within this designation and assist them in developing their business through financial and advisory solutions tailored to their needs.
Under this agreement, the bank offers wineries a dedicated range of financial and non-financial products and services, including financing, liquidity and investment solutions, as well as specialist advice aimed at facilitating day-to-day management, supporting decision-making and contributing to sustainable growth.
This partnership is part of Unicaja’s strategy to support sectors with strong regional roots and a significant role in generating employment and added value, such as the wine sector, which is fundamental to the economy and identity of the Bierzo region.
The agreement was signed by Unicaja’s regional manager for the North-West, Manuel Rubio, and by the president of the Regulatory Council of the Bierzo Designation of Origin, Adelino Pérez.
Speaking on behalf of Unicaja, Manuel Rubio emphasised that this agreement “reflects the bank’s commitment to the economic and social development of the regions where it operates, such as El Bierzo, a region with its own distinct identity and a productive sector closely linked to its environment and with a well-established track record, such as the wine sector”.
In this regard, he highlighted the work carried out by the DO Bierzo, which “represents the deep-rooted nature of a strategic sector for the region”. “Supporting the DO Bierzo means backing a model based on quality, origin and added value, and enabling them to tackle their challenges with greater confidence and planning,” he added.
For his part, Adelino Pérez remarked that “this agreement provides a useful tool enabling the wineries of the DO Bierzo to meet their financing, investment and day-to-day management needs with greater certainty, in a context where planning and access to specialist advice are essential for continued growth”. He also stressed that “collaboration with an institution that has a presence and knowledge of the region helps to strengthen the development of the Bierzo wine sector, which is key to the economy, landscape and identity of our region”.
Unicaja's ties to the region
Unicaja maintains a firm commitment to the regions where it operates, through its support for initiatives that help to boost the economy and the social fabric. In this context, the bank maintains close ties with the Bierzo region, supporting businesses, the self-employed and families.

About the Regulatory Council of the DO Bierzo
The Regulatory Council of the DO Bierzo is responsible for ensuring compliance with its regulations, which establish, amongst other things, the requirements for cultivation, monitoring and production of Bierzo wines covered by the DO, which extends across the region of the same name, situated in the north-west of the province of León.
The DO Bierzo was recognised in 1989, the year in which its regulations were approved and its Regulatory Council was established, responsible for guaranteeing the quality and origin of the production covered by the designation. It currently comprises 69 wineries.
The Bierzo vineyard is characterised by its Miocene soils, covered by a Quaternary layer, and by a unique microclimate, influenced by both the Atlantic and continental climates, with moderate rainfall, mild temperatures and high levels of sunshine, which create particularly favourable conditions for vine cultivation.
