This is the second time that this world competition is organized in Spain, as it was held in San Sebastian in 2005. The latest edition was hosted by the Australian city of Perth in 2016. Some 21,000 people are expected to attend this edition.

Unicaja Banco, within its interest in promoting sports, participates as official sponsor in the World Masters Athletics Championship. The competition will be held in Málaga from 4-16 September and it has more than 8,000 registered athletes from 87 countries. This is the world’s largest competition in this category.

World Master Athletics Championship
Participants will compete in the WMA in five-year age groups, both in the men and women categories, as well as in different disciplines and events.
Some of the events include 100, 200 and 400 m sprints; 800 and 1,500 m middle distance running; 5,000 and 10,000 m long distance running; half marathon and cross country running; relays; high jump, pole vault and long and triple jump; shot put, discus, hammer and javelin throw, decathlon and pentathlon and five, ten and 20 km race walking.
Malaga Athletics Stadium is the main venue of the championship, together with the Ciudad Deportiva de Carranque and the stadia of the University of Malaga (UMA) and Torremolinos, as well as the Palacio de los Deportes ‘José María Martín Carpena’ as an auxiliary venue.
This Championship will feature the participation of veteran athletes such as Man Kaur, 102 years old, who will compete in 100 and 200 running and in shot put and javelin throw. Giuseppe Ottaviani, of the same age, will participate in triple and long jump, and Rad Leovic, 91, will compete in 16 events.
The championship is organized by World Masters Athletics (WMA), the Real Federación Española de Atletismo (RFEA) and the Federación Andaluza de Atletismo (FAA). In addition to the sponsorship by Unicaja Banco, the event is supported by Málaga City Council, Andalusia Regional Government and Malaga Provincial Council, as well as Dismauto as official provider.
