Unicaja has been a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact since July 2013, a leading global corporate sustainability initiative, and has made a commitment to integrating its Ten Principles on human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption into the Institution's strategy, corporate culture and operations.
Unicaja has also been a partner of the Spanish Global Compact Network since April 2017, thereby strengthening its commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as to its participation in sectoral development initiatives and to continuous improvement in sustainability matters.
Adherence to the Global Compact entails the systematic integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria into decision-making processes, risk management and business development, thus constituting a reference framework for identifying and managing sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities.
Unicaja maintains its status as an active participant within this context, which involves the obligation of periodically reporting on its progress through a Communication on Progress (CoP). Since 2023, this reporting has been structured around a standardised digital form that enhances the comparability, traceability and transparency of the information being reported in keeping with growing regulatory requirements regarding ESG matters.
The Global Compact also acts as a framework that supplements European sustainability regulations, thereby facilitating the Institution's alignment with requirements set forth in the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) and associated standards (ESRS), particularly with regard to aspects related to governance, human rights, due diligence and environmental management.
In global terms, the Global Compact is the largest corporate sustainability initiative. It has over 20,000 participating entities in more than 160 countries and local networks in over 70 countries, granting this platform a high degree of international recognition and legitimacy. In Spain, nearly 1,900 entities had joined the Spanish network by 2025, establishing itself as one of the initiative's main national networks.
